EAST STROUDSBURG - East Stroudsburg University opened defense of its Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference men's soccer title by downing California, 3-1, Sunday at Eiler-Martin Stadium.

The Warriors, the PSAC champion seven of the last eight years including the last three, raised their overall record to 8-2-1. California is now 6-5 overall and 2-2 in the conference.

Jorge Chapoy and Troy Grubb scored goals within an eight-minute span of the first half to put ESU ahead, 2-0.

Chapoy took a pass from Karl Nusshag and bent a shot from just outside the box around goalie Seth Shaw into the lower left corner with 11:02 gone in the game. At the 18:23 mark, Grubb headed the ball in after Sean Stewart had brought the ball down field and passed to Tom Mustac, who floated a high pass into the box.

California's Brandon Neiss cut the margin to 2-1 early in the second half. The Warriors didn't wrap it up until Mustac connected from 18 yards out following a pass from Ahmet Kose with less than two minutes remaining.
