ESU-St. Anselm Men's Basketball

EAST STROUDSBURG - East Stroudsburg University ran into a hot-shooting St. Anselm team in the championship game of the 36th Rotary Pocono Classic Basketball Tournament Saturday night and fell, 91-61.

The Hawks were deadly from downtown all game, making eight of ten three-pointers for an 80 percent shooting average in the first half and 13 of 29 for 59 percent for the game. Seven different team members connected for 'threes.'

Guard Todd Manuel sank all five of his three-point shots and finished with a game-high 22 points. He was named the tournament outstanding player. Mike Zieja followed with three 'threes' and wound up with 12 points.

With ESU ahead, 20-19, midway through the first half, St. Anselm went on a 18-2 tear over four minutes to break the game open. Manuel scored 12 of the points including two three-pointers. The halftime difference was 15 points at 46-31.

It was the same story in the second half as the Hawks slowly, but steadily built their lead to the final 30-point margin.

ESU could not stop the Hawks on one end of the court and could not get a team offense going on the other end. A telling figure was assists in which St. Anselm had 23 assists on 29 baskets while ESU only made six assists on 26 field goals.

The Warriors' Juwan Justice finished with 17 points and center Waleed Driscoll, seeing his first extensive action of the season, contributed 11 points.

The loss left ESU with a 4-3 record with two home games this week against Goldey-Beacom Tuesday night and Felician Thursday night ending first-semester action. Both contests will start at 7 p.m. St. Anselm, an NCAA Division II quarter-finalist last year, is now 6-2.

Joining Manuel on the All-Tournament team were Justice and R.C. Kehoe of ESU, Kevin Sheehy of St. Anselm, David Miller of West Liberty and Samont Washington of New Haven.
