ESU-IUP Men's Basketball
INDIANA - Indiana University rolled to a 23-3 lead in the opening ten minutes and went on to trounce East Stroudsburg University, 106-68, in a non-conference men's basketball game Sunday.
It marked the second time that the Indians went over 100 points this season. They trounced another Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division foe, Mansfield, 130-89, in late December. The team is averaging 88 points per game.
From a 2-2 tie, IUP reeled off nine straight points with Brian Brennan hitting a three-pointer. ESU made a free throw and the Indians then scored 12 points in a row with Geoff Evans and Wes Layton both connecting for threes for their 20-point lead.
By halftime, IUP had a 58-29 lead, thanks to 62 percent shooting (16 for 26) including seven three-pointers in 13 tries. ESU shot at a 32 percent pace in the first half, 9 for 28, with two threes in eight attempts.
The Indians built their margin from the foul line in the second half. They finished with 38 free throws in 46 attempts as the team's five starters went 33 for 34 from the line.
Guard Keenan Holmes led the attack with 26 points and sank all 12 of his free throw tries. Brennan, who played at ESU in 1995-96, followed with 20 points while Aaron Faulkner added 17, Wes Layton 14 and Shatee Cook ten.
Shahad Abdur-Rahkman was the top scorer for ESU with 17 points while R.C. Kehoe contributed 12 and Wayne Bishop 11. Juwan Justice had his double-figure scoring streak ended at seven games as he fouled out with close to ten minutes remaining after scoring only seven points.
IUP finished with 47 percent shooting (29 for 61) compared to ESU's 37 percent mark (22 for 60). The Indians had a 53-31 rebounding edge, including 23 offensive boards, with the 6-7 Cooks tops with nine rebounds.
The loss dropped ESU's record to 6-5 heading into the team's PSAC Eastern Division opener at Cheyney Wednesday. IUP, an NCAA Division II quarter-finalist last year, is now 7-4.
