ESU-Scranton Women’s Lacrosse

SCRANTON – Junior attack wing Antonia Giannopoulos scored three of her game-high five goals in the last eight minutes as East Stroudsburg University broke a 12-12 tie and went on to defeat the University of Scranton, 17-13, in a season-opening women’s lacrosse game Thursday.

Center Leah Quigley added four goals, first home Michelle Cottiers three and second home Julie Dugan and attack wing Meghan Laube two apiece for the Warriors. Both Quigley and Dugan are freshmen.

Ali Burns led the Lady Royals with four goals while Liz Baumbach, the team’s leading scorer last year with a school-record 67 goals, was held to three. The Warriors’ Dina Young defended against Baumbach in the first half while Morgan Prosser covered her in the second.

Coach Sandy Miller and her ESU team will leave this weekend for Panama City, Fla. where they will play Hamilton in a 9 a.m. game Thursday.
