Warriors' Sandy Miller Honored by Peers
as South Region Field Hockey Coach of Year
East Stroudsburg, Pa. - East Stroudsburg University's Sandy Miller has been honored as the Dita/National Field Hockey Coaches' Association Division II South Region Coach of the Year after leading to Warriors to runner-up finishes in both the NCAA Division II and the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference championships.
Kelly McGowan of national champion Bentley College was chosen as the North Region Coach of the Year. The voting was done by the head coaches of the Division II field hockey teams.
Miller's 2001 team finished with a 16-7 record and made the championship game of the NCAA tournament with a stunning 1-0 semi-final victory over Lock Haven, the nation's top-ranked team at the time. The Warriors then lost to Bentley, 4-2, in the finals.
The ESU team also gained its best PSAC finish ever, placing second with a win over Shippensburg, 2-1 in overtime, in the conference semi-finals and a loss to Lock Haven, 4-0, in the championship game.
The Warriors posted a 16-7 overall record which was highlighted by a regular-season win over Bloomsburg for the first time in 21 years,. 2-1, and the playoff victory over Lock Haven. Miller also was selected as the PSAC Coach of the Year.
The veteran coach has compiled 15 straight non-losing seasons in her 18 years in charge of the ESU field hockey program. Her overall coaching record is 208-146-11. She also coaches women's lacrosse at the school.
