Three ESU Field Hockey Players Honored
on Coaches' Association All-America Team
East Stroudsburg, Pa. - Three players who led East Stroudsburg University to a runner-up finish in the NCAA Division II field hockey championships were rewarded Thursday by being named to the STX-National Field Hockey Coaches' Association Division II All-America team.
Midfielder Rachel Miller and goalie Kelly Wagner were chosen on the first team while midfielder Shannon McCracken was a second team selection.
All three made the All-Tournament team at the NCAA Division II Final Four. They led the Warriors to a 16-7 record and to second place in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference, the school highest finish ever.
A total of 32 players, 16 on the first team and 16 on the second, were selected in a balloting of the head coaches of the nation's Division II field hockey teams. National champion Bentley and PSAC champion Lock Haven had the most players honored with five apiece.
Miller, a senior from Tunkhannock (Tunkhannock High School), made the All-America first team for the second straight year. She was considered the Warriors' key player, both on offense and defense, from a left midfielder position, stopping opponents' right side attacks and moving the ball down the field quickly to the team's forwards.
The senior from Tunkhannock was a three-year starter at ESU after transferring from Lock Haven. She previously was selected on the All-PSAC first team for the second straight year. She scored one goal and had five assists this past season.
Wagner was the standout of the team's 1-0 NCAA semi-final round upset victory over Lock Haven with 12 saves, including ten in the second half to preserve the one-goal margin. She also made ten saves in a 2-1 regular-season victory over Bloomsburg, the school's first win over the Huskies in 21 years.
A three-year starter, the junior from Elizabethtown permitted a season average of 1.07 goals per game with ten shutouts. She already holds the school career record for shutouts with 24.5 with one season remaining. She has made the All-PSAC second team the last two years. McCracken, a junior from Collegeville (Methacton HS), was the Warriors' center midfielder and took the team's free hits. She scored five goals and had six assists including an assist on the lone goal in the NCAA win over Lock Haven. She was an All-Conference second team selection.
