Nagle PSAC East Defensive Player of the Year Again;

Sodano, Hostetter, Castiglioni also Make First Team

East Stroudsburg, Pa. - East Stroudsburg University stellar linebacker Kevin Nagle was named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division Defensive Player of the Year for the second time and was chosen on the All-Conference team for the fourth time Monday.

He was joined on the All-PSAC first team by three other ESU players - offensive guard Jim Sodano, punter Adam Hostetter and tailback Andre Castiglioni.

The Warriors had six other players honored on the second team including three offensive linemen, guard Shepard Alston and tackles Dan Bratton and Mike Serafin. Also recognized were defensive end Adam DeAngelo, linebacker Rich Butcofski and place-kicker Mike Berry.

The balloting was done by the head coaches of the seven PSAC Eastern Division schools.

Bloomsburg, the division champion and now an NCAA Division II quarter-finalist, dominated the first team voting with ten players selected.

Nagle became the first ESU player to gain PSAC Player of the Year honors twice. He also joined linebacker Jeff Johnson (1975-78) as the school's only four-time All-Conference selections.

The 6-2, 240-pound graduate student from Effort (Pleasant Valley HS) led the Warriors in tackles for the fourth straight years. He made 125 tackles this season, an average of 11.4 per game, which was second in the conference and first the PSAC East. He made eight sacks for 55 yards, third in the PSAC, and 16 tackles for loss for 77 yards.

Nagle finished his career with 477 tackles, second in ESU history to Johnson's 520. He had 33 career double-digit tackle games, including eight this season. He played in 42 games over four seasons.

Castiglioni rushed for a school record 1,160 yards which was fourth in the conference. The junior from Reading (Muhlenberg HS) also set school marks for the best rushing average with 116.0 yards per game and the most 100-yard games with six. He carried 220 times and averaged 5.3 yards per carry.

Sodano was the top blocker on the Warriors' offensive line. He didn't allow a single sack or quarterback flush in 11 games. The 6-2, 300-pound junior from Madison, N.J. (Bishop Ellard HS) made a team-high 17 pancake blocks, putting the defender on his back, and 14 roadgrade blocks, driving the opponent five yards down the field.

Hostetter was a repeat selection on the All-PSAC first team. The junior from Red Lion, Pa. (Red Lion) averaged 37.0 yards per punt and his 62 punts were returned only 49 yards, less than a yard per punt.

Alston, a senior from Newark, N.J.(Malcomb Shabazz HS), Bratton, a junior from Clarks Summit, Pa. (Abington Heights) and Serafin, a junior from Wilkes-Barre, Pa. (Coughlin), joined Sodano on the team's huge offensive line which averaged better than 300 pounds. The three allowed only one sack between them. Alston also had 14 roadgrade blocks and six pancakes.

DeAngelo, a red-shirt freshman from East Stroudsburg (East Stroudsburg HS), led the conference in sacks with 9.5 for 62 yards and had 13 tackles for loss overall for 71 yards. He was third on the team in tackles with 63.

Butcofski, a senior from Shavertown (Dallas HS) finished second on the team in tackles with 99 which was tied for fifth in the league. He made two sacks and seven tackles and broke up five passes.

Berry, a junior from Clarks Summit (Southridge HS, Miami) with 36 points on four field goals and 24 extra points. He had a long field goal of 38 yards.

With Nagle, DeAngelo and Butcofski the leaders, the Warriors finished third in the 14-team conference in total defense, allowing only 290.8 yards per game and were fourth in scoring defense, permitting 19.5 points per game.

Offensively, ESU's highest statistical finish was fifth in rushing offense with an average gain of 183.9 yards per game.

Coach Denny Douds' team finished with a 6-5 record, its first winning season in four years.

Junior quarterback Mike de Marteleire of Kutztown was selected as the PSAC Eastern Division Player of the Year after leading the Golden Bears to a school-record seven victories against four defeats. He passed for a league-high 2,320 yards and 24 touchdowns.

Mansfield linebacker Dan Holland was chosen as the PSAC East Rookie of the Year. He made 112 tackles, fourth in the league, with 17 for loss.

Bloomsburg's Danny Hale, whose team has won ten straight games and will play host to Northwood in the NCAA quarter-finals Saturday, was named the PSAC East Coach of the Year.
