EAST STROUDSBURG 33 CLARION 27
EAST STROUDSBURG - East Stroudsburg tailback Andre Castiglioni scampered for a 16-yard touchdown run with 1:53 left in the game to give the Warriors a 33-27 win over Clarion University on Thursday night in the opening game of the 2001 season for both teams.
The game was held at East Stroudsburg South High School and Memorial Field as the first ESYA College Football Classic.
Castiglioni's run came capped an 83-yard drive on seven plays and came on third and goal at the Clarion 16 yard line. There were two other key plays during the drive. Castigliani burst 32 yards on a third-and-ten draw play and quarterback Jeremy Palm followed with a 49-yard pass to end John Kotarsky.
It was the second straight year that the senior tailback scored the winning touchdown against Clarion. Last year, he dashed 25 yards with 1:05 remaining for a 37-33 victory.
Clarion rallied from a 20-point third quarter deficit to tie the game with 3:51 left as Golden Eagle quarterback Adam Almashy hooked up with tight end Andy Pore on a 21 yard touchdown pass. Jason Flora's extra point tied the game 27-27.
The Warriors stormed to a 17-0 lead as quarterback Jeremy Palm completed a pair of touchdown passes of 61 and 16 yards to end John Kotarsky and Mike Berry kicked an 18-yard field goal.
Clarion got on the board in the second quarter on fullback Demetric Gardner's 33-yard run to cut the deficit to 17-7.
Berry kicked another field goal, a 41-yarder with seven seconds left before intermission as the Warriors left the field with a 20-7 edge.
ESU expanded their lead to 27-7 at 9:32 of the third quarter when fullback A.J. Oliveri scored on a one-yard run.
Clarion stormed back behind the running of halfback Robert Walker. Walker scored on a six yard run with 3:39 left in the third to make it 27-14 ESU.
Clarion recovered a fumble at the East Stroudsburg 24 yard line which set up the Eagles next touchdown. Walker capped the short drive with a 3-yard run on fourth and goal from the three to cut the lead to 27-20. Clarion missed the PAT.
Clarion then drove 77-yards on seven plays, with Almashy's pass over the middle to Pore for the 21-yard touchdown tying the game at 27-27.
Castiglioni gained 149 yards on 29 carries, setting a school record for career 100-yard games with eight. Fullback A.J. Oliveri barreled for 55 yards on 11 carries. Palm passed for 201 yards, completing eight of 24 passes, while Kotarsky grabbed five passes for 167 yards.
Clarion's Demetric Gardner gained 108 yards. Robert Walker rushed 12 times for 66 yards. Tight end Andy Pore grabbed three passes for 44 yards.
East Stroudsburg outgained Clarion 396-302 in total offense. ESU had 195 rushing and 205 passing. Clarion posted 209 rushing and 93 passing.
The ESU defense was led by linebacker Ryan Vermillion, who made 15 tackles, safety Jeremy Brown, eight tackles, and linebacker Phil DeCecco and tackle Dustin Barno, seven apiece. Barno also had two sacks for 13 yards.
The Warriors will open their Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference season Saturday, Sept. 8th at 1:05 p.m. against West Chester at Eiler-Martin Stadium.
