ESU Punter Adam Hostetter Selected to Play
in Cactus Bowl, Makes Two All-Regional Teams
East Stroudsburg, Pa. - East Stroudsburg University punter Adam Hostetter has been chosen to play in the Whataburger Cactus Bowl Division II All-Star Football Game Friday, Jan. 11 in Kingsville, Tx. Kickoff will be 6:30 p.m. CST.
Hostetter led the final Division II statistics in punting with a 44.4-yard average on 54 punts for 2,397 yards. That broke the ESU school record by more than two yards.
He averaged 40 yards punting in every contest except for the Cheyney game in which he punted once for 37 yards. Opponents returned his kicks only 178 yards, just over three yards per punt and the Warriors led the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference in net punting yardage.
The 6-1, 220-pound senior from Red Lion also has been chosen on the ECAC Division II All-South Region team for the third straight year and the Daktronics Division II All-Northeast Region team for the first time. He previously was selected on the All-PSAC Eastern Division first team for the third time.
He is joined on the Daktronics All-Regional team by two teammates, offensive guard Jim Sodano and defensive safety Jeremy Brown. Sodano was the Warriors' top blocker, making 20 pancake blocks and not allowing a sack all season. Brown was one of the nation's leaders in interceptions with eight which he returned for 163 yards and two touchdowns.
All three ESU players are now eligible for the Daktronics Division II All-America team which will be announced Dec. 20. The Warriors finished with a 7-3 record, best at the school in eight years.
A total of 80 players were selected for the Cactus Bowl, 40 on the East all-star team and 40 on the West. There were three other PSAC players picked in running backs Marques Glaze of Bloomsburg and Dorrian Glenn of Slippery Rock and defensive lineman Chad Oberholtzer of Shippensburg.
The players invited to the game are considered the top professional prospects from the Division II ranks. Scouts from the National Football League closely watch the practices and the game.
Last year, ESU's All-America linebacker Kevin Nagle played in the Cactus Bowl and later was signed by the Washington Redskins as a free agent, although he did not make the team.
Proceeds from the contest will go to the Shriners Hospitals for Children, 22 orthopedic and burn centers throughout the United States, Mexico and Canada.
