Edinboro, Pa. - Tailback Andre Castiglioni broke East Stroudsburg University's single-season rushing record, but three special teams mistakes cost the Warriors in a 20-9 season-ending defeat to Edinboro Saturday.
Castiglioni ran for 115 yards in 21carries to give him a season total of 1,160 yards, breaking the school mark of 1,109 yards set by Steward Ford in 1997.
The Fighting Scots scored field goals in their first two possessions. On the first, a 33-yard pass from quarterback Jack Davis to wide receiver Stephane Lubin put them in ESU territory, and after the drive stalled on the 5 yard line, Sean McNicholas came in and kicked a 22-yard field goal. There was only 4:34 gone in the game.
On the ensuing kickoff, John Jeffries was hit by Edinboro's Mike Miodus and fumbled with the ball recovered by the Fighting Scots' Thomas Wallace on the ESU 29-yard line. This time McNicholas came in and booted a 53-yard field goal, second longest in PSAC history. The conference record is 55 yards by Eric Wentling of West Chester in 1983. That made it 6-0 with 8:24 left in the first quarter.
The Fighting Scots scored a touchdown in the second quarter after a bad snap from center on a Adam Hostetter punt attempt wound up with Edinboro's ball on the ESU 23-yard line. Davis completed two passes to Javar Manning to the 15 and to Lubin to the seven. Bernard Henry then carried to the one and took it across with 5:13 left in the half. McNicholas' kick made it 13-0.
ESU scored its lone touchdown on a 77-yard drive in eight plays. Quarterback Jeff Brobst completed three straight passes of 37 yards to John Kotarsky, six yards to Kotarsky and eight yards to John Jeffries to put the ball on the Edinboro 26-yard line. A roughing the passer penalty later moved it to the 14, and Brobst on third down completed an 11-yard pass to Kotarsky to the one. A.J. Oliveri plunged one-yard for the touchdown, but Mike Berry's extra point was blocked leaving the score at 13-6 with 2:37 left in the half.
The Warriors notched three more points on the last play of the half, on Berry's 38-yard field goal to make the halftime score 13-9. It followed a 39-yard drive in which Castiglioni ran for 23 yards and broke the school record.
There was only one score in the second half which followed Mike Glover 's fumble of a punt return which was recovered by Chris Kain on the ESU 25 yard line. The Fighting Scots moved in to score in eight plays with Alonzo Roebuck making a ten-yard run to the one yard line and then plunging across for the touchdown with 3:43 left to play.
ESU had opportunities with the best one coming at the end of the third quarter but a fourth and two play from the 27-yard line was stopped and Edinboro took over. The Warriors also had several passes dropped, two when receivers were apparently in the clear and headed for touchdowns.
ESU finished with a 6-5 record, its first winning season in four years. Edinboro finished 5-6.
