CHEYNEY – Freshman tailback Greg Vaughn ran for 161 yards, scored one touchdown and set up another as East Stroudsburg University downed Cheyney, 35-14, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division football game Saturday.
Vaughn, a reserve pressed into service when starter Andre Castiglioni became ill midway through the week, carried 29 times and had two long runs of 42 yards in the first half and 48 yards in the second.
The 5-7, 190-pounder ran through holes opened by the team’s huge offensive line and especially the left side of tackle Dan Bratton and guard Jim Sodano.
With the game scoreless late in the first quarter, the Warriors went their left three plays with Vaughn bursting loose on his 42-yarder and then Jason Wimmer, who was converted from fullback to tailback during the week, carrying nine yards and final ten yards for the first touchdown.
Vaughn then scored himself on a one-yard run in the second quarter to up the margin to 14-0. It followed a 70-yard drive in 13 plays engineering by quarterback Jon Pry, who connected on three passes for 37 yards.
The ESU defense then took over in the second half and put 11 points on the board.
Linebacker Kevin Nagle produced the two points as he sacked Cheyney quarterback Antoine Graham in the end zone for a third-quarter safety. Nagle added his conference-leading total with nine tackles including two sacks.
Cornerback Mike Glover then made a pair of interceptions, one on a Cheyney extra-point attempt which he returned more than 90 yards for two points. He later picked off a Wolves’ pass and ran it back 25 yards for a touchdown.
The Warriors’ other points came on Mike Berry’s 29-yard field goal and Pry’s 27-yard pass to Mike Patrick.
Cheyney’s John Chestnut caught two touchdown passes, the first 11 yards from tailback Ladontay Bell on a surprise option pass and the other 17 yards from Chris Waiters in the finals minute of the game.
ESU had numerous other opportunities to score thanks to Cheyney’s inability to punt against the wind. Chestnut, the Wolves’ punter, had one punt of six yards, three punts of 12 yards each and one punt of 14 yards. He also had a 65-yarder with the wind.
The Warriors failed to score in the red zone four times from the 19, 10, four and nine yard lines.
Pry completed six of 11 passes for 102 yards. John Kotarsky had three catches for 77 yards, also grabbing a 30-yard from Geoff Brobst, the team’s other quarterback.
ESU defensive end Adam DeAngelo, the conference leader in sacks, had two more for ten yards. He finished with nine tackles. Linebacker Rich Butcofski and tackle Rich Kane each made seven tackles.
The win was the Warriors’ 21st straight over Cheyney and lifted their series advantage to 44-1. The only loss was in 1979.
ESU broke a four-game losing streak and is now 5-4 overall and 2-3 in the conference. Cheyney dropped its sixth straight game and is now 2-6 overall and 0-5 in PSAC play.
