EAST STROUDSBURG - Craig Lough booted a 33-yard field goal in the first possession of overtime to give Shippensburg a 17-14 victory over East Stroudsburg in a non-conference football game Saturday.
It was East Stroudsburg's third overtime game of the season, all at home, and second loss. The Warriors are now 4-4. Shippensburg improved to 3-5.
The Red Raiders reached the 12-yard line in overtime on Dave Brown's 11-yard run and Ryan Hartley's two-yard run. After a loss back to the 16 and an incomplete pass, Lough came on to kick his second field goal of the season in three attempts.
On its possession, East Stroudsburg reached the 18-yard line and Mike Berry was called on to try and kick a game-tying 35-yard field goal. The snap was low, however, and Berry's kick never got any height and was blocked by cornerback Tony Johnson.
The teams battled scoreless through almost three quarters before the Red Raiders scored on quarterback Chris Gicking's 43-yard pass to Melvin Scott with 38 seconds left in the third quarter.
The Raiders tallied again and took a 14-0 lead with 11:47 left in the game as Johnson recovered a East Stroudsburg fumbled lateral in the end zone.
East Stroudsburg came back to score just over a minute later with 10:30 to go on tailback Andre Castiglioni 19-yard run. The Warriors recovered a fumble on the ensuing kickoff and went in to score the tying touchdown on fullback Jason Wimmer's one-yard plunge with 7:51 left.
Castiglioni was the game's leading rusher with 152 yards on 30 carries. It was his school record-tying fifth 100-yard game of the season and gave him a season total of 996 yards.
Linebacker Kevin Nagle, the conference's leading tackler, led the ESU defense with 11 tackles while cornerback Jeremy Brown had ten and also made an interception. Linebacker Jason Zinn had an interception and a sack, tackle David Dean an interception on a pass tipped by tackle Rich Kane and end Adam DeAngelo two sacks.
There were 21 punts in the game, 12 by East Stroudsburg's Adam Hostetter, who averaged 36.2 yards per punt, and nine by the Raiders' Bill Shipp, who had a 35.1-yard average.
