Football - ESU 10, Glenville 0

GLENVILLE, W.V. - Undefeated East Stroudsburg University won its third straight football game and posted its first shutout victory in nine years by downing Glenville State, 10-0, Saturday at Pioneer Field.

The ESU defense allowed only 59 yards rushing and 123 passing for a total of 182 yards, its best performance since Cheyney was held to 83 total yards in the last shutout win, 28-0 in 1991.

Tailback Andre Castigliani and Nate Pendry combined for 228 rushing to power the ESU offense. Castiglioni turned in third straight 100-yard game with 148 yards on 24 carries. Pendry ran for 80 yards on only seven attempts and set up the game's only touchdown.

With the game still scoreless in the third quarter, the Warriors went 68 yards on only five plays for the score which came on fullback A.J. Oliveri's one-yard plunge.

Castigliani started the series with a six-yard run which carried the ball to the 37. After an incomplete pass, quarterback Jeremy Palm went back to pass again and after being rushed, took off up the middle and scampered 31 yards to the Glenville 32-yard line. Pendry then barreled around the right side 30 yards all the way to the two to set up Oliveri's score which came with 1:51 left in the quarter. Mike Berry added the extra point for a 7-0 lead.

Berry then added a 36-yard field with 6:24 remaining to cement the win. It followed a 47-yard drive in seven plays featuring Castiglioni's 22-yard run and Pendry's 11-yard gallop.

Glenville was held to three first downs and never got out of its own territory in the first half. ESU had the only scoring opportunity, driving to the Pioneers' eight-yard line where Castiglioni was stopped just short on a fourth-and-two play.

In the second half, Glenville threatened three times, but each time the ESU defense, which has allowed only one touchdown in the last ten quarters, met the challenge. The Pioneers took the second half kickoff and drove into ESU territory for the first time to the 39-yard line before ESU linebacker Kevin Nagle tackled tailback Dan Williams for a four-yard loss on third down play forcing a punt.

In the fourth quarter trailing, 7-0, Glenville moved to the ESU 34 as Williams gained eight, eight and six yards on three consecutive runs. On second and four, tackle Dustin Barno stopped Williams for no gain and the Pioneers had to go to the air and quarterback Jack Mental threw two intercomplete passes.

On the next series, Glenville made its furthest advance to the ESU 17 and had a fourth and one when linebacker Eric Marcovcy stepped up and nailed Williams to give the Warriors possession.

Nagle had a game-high of 13 tackles and also made an interception. End Adam DeAngelo had ten tackles including a sack and linebacker Rich Butcofsky had seven tackles and recovered a fumble. Tackle David Dean had a pair of sacks.

The 3-0 record represents the Warriors' best start since 1994 when the team won its first three games, but then faded to a 5-5 record. ESU will open its home season Saturday against another West Virginia team, Shepherd, an NCAA Division II tournament regional finalist last year. Game-time will be 1 p.m. at Eiler-Martin Stadium. Glenville is now 0-3.
