ESU-Millersville Baseball

MILLERSVILLE – Ryan Hatfield doubled for the winning run in the sixth inning as East Stroudsburg University trimmed Millersville, 2-1, in the second game of a season-ending Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader Saturday.

The Marauders won the opener, also by a 2-1 margin, on Matt Knox’s solo homer in the fifth inning.

In the second contest with two out in the sixth, Bryan Yagel, the Warriors’ leading hitter, singled in his final at-bat of the season. He then came all the way around to score on Hatfield’s shot into the left field corner.

Pitcher Jason Ryan went the route, allowing eight hits and one run, to gain his fifth victory of the season against four defeats. He finished strongly, striking out the side in the seventh inning to end up with five strikeouts.

Millersville took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning on Knox’s second home run of the day and his 14th of the season, a school record. The Warriors tied the score in the fifth on singles by Joe Sobeski and Blake Martin and a wild pitch.

Yagel was 2-for-3 in the game and 3-for-6 in the doubleheader. The junior first baseman from Sunbury finished the season with a .430 batting average and a school-record 63 RBIs.

Sobeski and Hatfield also were 2-for-3 in the contest.

In the opener, the Marauders’ Matt Wagner bested ESU’s Mike Zimorowicz in a tight pitching dual. Wagner allowed only four hits while Zimorowicz gave up six, but one of them was Knox’s game-winning shot over the left field fence.

The Warriors’ lone run came in the first inning as Brett Reynolds reached on an error, took second on Matt Harmic’s single, stole third base and raced home on Yagel’s single.

The split was the Warriors’ eighth in 12 PSAC doubleheader. They finished 12-12 in the league and 23-19-1 overall. Millersville wound up 30-16 overall and 13-11 in conference play.
