ESU-New Jersey Tech Baseball

NEWARK, N.J. – Righthander Craig Whitten, making his first start of the season, fired a no-hitter as East Stroudsburg University downed New Jersey Tech, 10-0, in the second game of a baseball doubleheader Tuesday night at Riverfront Stadium.

The Highlanders won the opener, 12-11, scoring six runs in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Whitten, who had made eight previous relief appearances, struck out nine batters and walked two. The junior from Lansdale faced only 12 batters over the last four innings, hitting one batter in the seventh inning but erasing him on a double play. He raised his season record to 2-1.

Matt Harmic blasted a three-run in the sixth inning, his second of the night, to lead the team’s 12-hit attack. Steve Harris was 2-for-2, Nick Farkas 2-for-3 with a triple, Ryan Hatfield 2-for-4 with a double and Tadgh LaBar 2-for-5.

In the opener, the Warriors seemingly had the game wrapped up after scoring five runs in the top of the seventh inning to take an 11-6 lead. Farkas and LaBar each had two-run homers during the rally.

NJIT came back in the bottom of the inning, however, and won the game on Kevin McCarthy’s two-run single. The Highlanders only had seven hits in the game, but took advantage of 14 walks issued by four ESU pitchers.

Harmic hit a solo homer in the first inning of the opener. LaBar was 3-for-5 while PJ Worznick was 2-for-2 and Harmic and Farkas 2-for-4.

The split leaves ESU with a 20-17-1 record with a home doubleheader scheduled today against Shippensburg at 1 p.m. on Mitterling Field. NJIT is now 14-23.
