ESU-Kutztown Baseball

KUTZTOWN - Mike Zimorowicz pitched a six-hit shutout in the opener and Joe Sobeski hit a game-winning three-run homer in the nightcap as East Stroudsburg University swept a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader over Kutztown, 3-0 and 6-3, Saturday.

It was the Warriors' second straight sweep over Kutztown and lifted the team's overall record to 24-22 and 11-11 in the conference. The Golden Bears dropped to 26-20 overall and 9-11 in PSAC play.

Zimorowicz bested Kutztown's ace Steve Fitch in a first-game pitching dual. The ESU sophomore from West Scranton struck out six batters and walked two. He stranded eight runners, including four on third base and two on second, in raising his record to 6-4.

The Warriors reached Fitch, who is now 10-3 with two of his three losses to ESU, for two runs in the first inning. Brett Reynolds singled and Scott Roth reached on a two-base error. Both then came home on Matt Harmic's single.

They added a run in the fifth as Tadgh LaBar singled, stole second base and came home on Brett Reynolds' 16th double of the season, a new school record.

In the second game with the score, 3-3, in the seventh, Reynolds singled, Harmic reached on a walk and Sobeski then belted his homer over the leftfield fence, just inside the foul pole.

That made a winner of ESU's Mike Pavolko, who gained a school record-tying seventh victory. He allowed six hits and two earned runs in gaining his third win of the season over Kutztown. His record is now 7-4.

Behind 3-2, the Warriors had tied the game in the sixth inning on Frank Ur's single. They also once in the first on Harmic's single and again in the third on a single by Sobeski.

Reynolds was 2 for 3 in each game which gives him 69 hits for the season, one less than the school mark of 70 set by Jeff Pfeiffer in 1985. He is batting .437. Sobeski was 3 for 4 with four RBIs in the second game and is hitting .393.
