EAST STROUDSBURG - Scott Roth pitched, batted and bunted East Stroudsburg University to an 11-5 victory over West Chester in the first game of a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader Thursday on Mitterling Field.
The Golden Rams (9-32, 4-12 PSAC) came back to take the second game, 7-6, scoring four runs in the sixth inning and one in the seventh on only one hit.
Roth pitched 5 1/3 shutout innings in the opener, allowing only two hits and walking none. He struck out four batters. He doubled in a run in the first inning and then squeezed in two runs in the sixth. On the bunt, Tadgh LaBar scored from third base and Brett Reynolds racing around from second base, never stopped and slid across after the pitcher threw to first base for the out.
Reynolds scored four runs in the doubleheader and set a school season record with 51, just ahead of LaBar, who now has 50. The old mark was 48 runs by J.D. Stern in 1998. Reynolds also had a double in the opener and tied the school season record of 15 doubles set by Bryan Cogliano in 1997.
LaBar went 2 for 4 in the game with two runs-batted-in. Ryan Hatfield was 2 for 3 with an RBI and Roger Green had a two-run single.
In the second game, the Warriors (22-22, 9-11 PSAC) took a 5-2 lead with Joe Sobeski driving in three of the runs with a two-run single in the third and a sacrifice fly in the fourth.
West Chester rallied with four runs in the top of the sixth, however, on four walks and an error to take a 6-5 lead. The Warriors tied the score in the bottom of the inning as Reynolds singled, stole second base and rode home on Roth's single.
The Golden Rams won the game in the seventh when Brian Linders singled and later scored from third base on a wild pickoff attempt on a runner on first.
ESU's Mike Pavolko worked one inning in relief and had his string of shutout innings ended at 15 in taking the loss.
