ESU-Kutztown Baseball
EAST STROUDSBURG - Mike Waldt hit a three-run homer to win the first game and Danny Nelson pitched a one-hit, 11-strikeout victory in the second game as Kutztown swept a baseball doubleheader over East Stroudsburg University, 6-5 and 2-1, Thursday.
The two one-run losses dropped the Warriors to 19-15-1 overall and 10-10 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. Kutztown is now 28-13 overall and 12-6 in PSAC play.
The Warriors led the opener, 4-3, heading into the seventh inning. Dave Rode was hit by a pitch and after two outs, Dennis Smeding walked. The lefthanded Waldt then blasted a first pitch over the fence in deep rightfield to put the Golden Bears ahead, 6-4.
ESU didn't quit in the bottom of the seventh as Ryan Hatfield walked and Joe Sobeski and Nick Farkas both singled for one run. Then with runners on first and second, Ryan Conrad hit what appeared to be a game-ending groundout, but Waldt, the first baseman, bobbled the ball and Conrad was safe. Pinch-runner Steve Harris streaked around third base and headed home, but Waldt's throw to catcher John Yersley cut him down at the plate for the final out.
The Warriors had 11 hits against Bausher, considered of the PSAC's best pitcher with a current 8-2 record. Nick Farkas was 2-for-3 and batted in two runs while Blake Martin was 2-for-3 with one RBI and Ryan Conrad 2-for-4, also with an RBI.
Kutztown also won the second game in the seventh inning. With the score tied, 1-1, Joe Leach walked and moved around to third on Al Fitch's single which took a bad hop past first base. Dave Rode then hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to bring Leach home.
The Warriors' only hit off Nelson was Joe Sobeski's ground single down the rightfield line in the fifth inning. The team's lone run came in the sixth inning on two errors.
Nelson struck out the side in the seventh inning to wrap the win, his sixth against two defeats. He walked only one batter.
