ESU-West Chester Baseball
WEST CHESTER – Ryan Hatfield belted home runs in each game as East Stroudsburg University swept a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader over West Chester, 11-6 and 5-3, Monday.
Hatfield went 5-for-7 with four RBIs and three runs scored in the twinbill. Teammate Tadgh LaBar was 4-for-9 with four RBIs while Bryan Yagel was 3-for-6 to raise his conference-leading average to .454.
The Warriors trailed 2-0 in the first game when Hatfield hit a solo homer in the second inning. They then broke loose for eight runs in the third inning with LaBar delivering three with a bases-loaded triple and P.J. Worsnick a pair with a double. Yagel drove in a run with a single during the rally, raising his school-record RBI total to 53.
Nick Farkas doubled in the team’s final two runs in the sixth inning. Mike Zimorowicz went 5 2/3 innings to gain the pitching win, his fifth against four defeats, while Craig Whitten finished up.
In the second game, West Chester again jumped to 2-0 first-inning lead. The Warriors tied the score in the second inning on singles by Blake Martin and LaBar. They won the game in the fifth inning as Matt Harmic and Yagel singled, one run scored on an error and two more came across on Hatfield’s homer to left-centerfield.
Jason Ryan pitched a six-hitter to raise his pitching record to 4-3. It was his fifth complete game.
The sweep kept the ESU nine in PSAC playoff contention with a 10-8 record with six games remaining, starting with a key doubleheader at home against Kutztown Thursday. The team is 18-13-1 overall. West Chester dropped to 19-22-1 overall and 7-9 in the PSAC.
