ESU-Bloomsburg Baseball

BLOOMSBURG - Sophomore Mike Zimorowicz pitched East Stroudsburg University's first no-hitter in nine years as the Warriors downed Bloomsburg, 9-0, in the opener of a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader Saturday.

The Huskies (9-17, 1-3 PSAC) came back to take the second game, 11-2, scoring six runs in the first two innings.

Zimorowicz controlled the game with three strikeouts, ten infield groundouts and three popups, one of which was turned into a double play. He retired 12 straight batters from the first to the fifth inning before running into control problems and giving up a hit-batsman and four of his game total of five walks.

The 5-10 righthander from West Scranton High School won his fourth game of the season against one defeat. He was 5-1 with a pair of one-hitters last year.

The last ESU no-hitter was fired by Joel Bennett against Kutztown in 1991. Bennett had short stint with the Philadelphia Phillies last year.

The Warriors (9-11, 1-3 PSAC) broke the game open with five runs in the second inning highlighted by Scott Roth's two-run single and Matt Harmic's two-run double. Harmic went 3 for 4 at the plate while Brett Reynolds was 2 for 3 with a homer and a double.

In the second game, Bloomsburg tallied four runs in the first inning with Jason Helcoski driving in two with a single. Aaron Welles hit a two-run homer in the second inning for a 6-0 lead.

That was more than pitcher Ben Schneider needed as he limited the Warriors to two runs, both on homers by Tadgh LaBar and Ryan Hatfield. LaBar and Reynolds both were 2 for 4.
