BOWIE, Md. - East Stroudsburg University scored seven runs in the first inning and nine runs in the sixth to defeat Bowie State, 16-3, in a season-opening baseball game Saturday.
The Warriors then dropped a 4-1 decision to Kutztown in a second game as the Golden Bears scored their four runs in the seventh inning.
In the first game, ESU's Tadgh LaBar and Brett Reynolds each went 3 for 5 and drove in two runs while Joe Sobeski, a freshman catcher making his collegiate debut, hit a pair of doubles.
Jason Tribbet pitched five innings and allowed only two runs, while striking out four to gain the victory. Gordy Kocher hurled the last two innings and gave up one run and struck out three.
In the second contest, the Warriors took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the sixth on Scott Roth's bunt single and Matt Harmic's double. Mike Pavolko was cruising with a five-hit shutout over the first six innings.
Then in the seventh, the Golden Bears' David Steckel doubled and Dan Newton tied the game with a double. A hit-batsman and a walk loaded the bases and Pat Lancianese drove in the go-ahead run with single.
Roth went 2 for 3 with a double while Sobeski and Harmic also had doubles for the Warriors, who will play a single seven-inning game against Bowie State today at 12:30
