MANSFIELD – Gordy Kocher and Ryan Amey pitched three-hit shutouts as East Stroudsburg University swept Mansfield, 7-0 and 5-0, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division baseball doubleheader Saturday.
Kocher, a sophomore from Northampton High School, struck out four batters and walked two in the opener. Amey, a freshman from Emmaus High School, had three strikeouts and no walks in the second game.
It gave the Warriors three straight shutout wins and lifted the team’s overall record to 10-5-1 and PSAC mark to 3-1. Jason Ryan had fired a no-hitter in a 1-0 victory over Bloomsburg Wednesday.
The Mounties, who came into the game with a conference-leading .338 team batting average, dropped to 15-6 overall and 4-2 in the PSAC.
The Warriors scored in five of their seven at-bats in the opener, getting ten hits off three Mansfield pitchers. Brett Reynolds went 3-for-4 at the plate while Len Makarczyk was 2-for-2.
With a 2-0 lead, ESU broke the game open with three runs in the third inning. Joe Sobeski doubled in two of the runs and the third scored on a P.J. Worsnick’s fielder’s choice grounder.
Kocher faced only 25 batters, four over the minimum as two Manfield base-runners were erased in double plays. He didn’t allow a runner past second base in raising his record to 3-0.
Amey and the Mounties’ Mark Bell hooked up a scoreless dual for six innings before the Warriors broke through for five runs with two outs in the seventh inning.
After Ryan Hatfield walked, Steve Harris doubled him home for the first run. Tadgh LaBar then singled for a second run and after Reynolds walked, Matt Harmic singled in two more runs. Bryan Yagel drove in the final run with a single. LaBar went 2-for-3.
Amey retired the side in order in the bottom of the seventh for his second win against one defeat. He faced 26 batters and one Mansfield runner got to third base on a wild pitch with two outs in the fourth inning, but was stranded.
The Warriors will play another doubleheader today at home against New Jersey Tech, beginning at 1 p.m.
