ESU-Bloomsburg Baseball

EAST STROUDSBURG - Making his home collegiate debut, righthander Jason Ryan hurled a no-hitter as East Stroudsburg University edged Bloomsburg, 1-0, in the second game of a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division doubleheader Wednesday.

The Huskies won the first game, 12-6, scoring nine runs in the seventh inning with Brian Martin's triple the key hit.

Ryan, a junior from Glen Falls, N.Y., struck out six batters and walked three. He faced only 23 batters, two over the minimum, as one base-runner was erased in a double play.

It was the second straight year that an ESU pitcher had a no-hitter against Bloomsburg. Last year, Mike Zimorowicz stopped the Huskies in a 9-0 Warrior victory.

Ryan transferred to ESU this season from Schenectady Junior College. He was making his fourth start, but first at Mitterling Field. He now has a 2-1 record and 2.35 earned-run average.

"I was fired up to pitch after we lost the first game," Ryan said after his no-hitter. "I knew we had to have a split and it was game-time for me.

"Early in the game, all three of my pitches, fast ball, curve and changeup, were working so I went with them. Later, I was so fired up I going more with the fast ball," said Ryan, who threw 88 pitches with 53 of them for strikes.

It was his first no-hitter in either high school, junior college or collegiate competition although he threw a no-hitter one time in a summer league contest.

Bloomsburg's only scoring threat was in the fifth inning. Jason Helcoski walked and was sacrificed to second. P.J. Vanni laced a hard grounder down the left side, but third baseman Ryan Hatfield made a backhanded grap and just threw Vanni out at first base.

The Warriors scored their lone run off losing pitcher David Williams in the first inning. Tadgh LaBar singled and was forced at second base on Brett Reynolds' grounder. Reynolds then took third on Matt Harmic's double down the rightfield line and raced home on Bryan Yagel's groundout to the pitcher.

In the opener, the Warriors had an early 3-0 lead and led, 4-3, entering the seventh inning. The Huskies' Nick Strachokus walked and then Martin hit his triple deep to left center field to drive in the tying run. He then scored the go-ahead run on an error before the flood gates opened.

Bloomsburg used five hits, four walks and two ESU errors for their runs. Helcoski drove in a pair with a single.

ESU had an edge in hits, 12-7, with P.J. Worsnick going 3-for-3, LaBar 3-for-4 and Yagel 2-for-4 with a two-run homer and a double. LaBar also was 2 for 3 in the second game.
