ESU Baseball

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Joe Sikorsky hit home runs in each game as Slippery Rock swept a baseball doubleheader over East Stroudsburg University, 8-5 and 11-10, Wednesday at Terry Park.

Sikorsky went 4-for-7 in the twinbill and batted in five runs. The Rock scored 19 runs and had 23 hits against an ESU pitching staff, which had allowed only 3.8 runs per game over its first ten contests.

In the opener, Slippery Rock (9-4) broke a 5-5 tie with three runs in the bottom of the third inning. Mike Gunn walked and Sikorsky slugged a home run over the leftfield fence. John Kanche followed with a triple and scored on an error.

Anthony Piazza went 4-for-4 for the Warriors (7-5) while Brett Reynolds was 2-for-4.

The second game was tied, 9-9, when the Rock tallied two runs in the top of the seventh inning. Greg Stokes tripled and raced home on a wild pitch. Dave DeCola, who had gone 3 for 3 with a homer, was intentionally walked and came around on a wild pitch, Sikorsky's single and Kanche's sacrifice fly.

ESU came back within one run in the bottom of the seventh on Ryan Conrad's double and Scott Roth's single, but winning pitcher Dave Samson closed the door. Samson also had a save in relief of Craig Petulla in the first game.

Roth was 3-for-5 and Tadgh LaBar and Roger Green 2-for-3 in the second game. The Warriors will close their Florida trip today with single games against Franklin Pierce at 12 noon and Slippery Rock again at 3:30.
