ESU-Mount Vernon Nazarene Baseball

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Brett Reynolds went 3 for 3 and Anthony Piazza socked a home run as East Stroudsburg University defeated Mount Vernon Nazarene, 9-5, in the second game to gain a split in a baseball doubleheader at Terry Park Tuesday.

The Ohio team won the first contest, 10-8, scoring six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning after the Warriors had tallied six runs in the top of the inning.

ESU (7-3) went on top right away in the second game with four runs in the first inning with Tadgh LaBar and Brett Reynolds singling and later scoring on Scott Roth's sacrifice fly and Matt Harmic's single. The other two runs came across following errors.

Piazza's home run over the leftfield fence and singles by Joe Sobeski and Steve Harris followed by a groundout produced two more runs in the third inning. The team then wrapped up the scoring with three runs in the sixth with Harmic and Harris driving in two with singles and Piazza delivering the third with a sacrifice fly.

In the opener, Mount Vernon pitcher Mark Coulter had a no-hitter for five innings before ESU exploded for eight hits in the sixth. Tadgh LaBar had two hits in the inning while Harmic, Piazza, Sobeski and Harris all had run-producing singles.

Behind, 6-4. the Cougars (4-4) immediately matched ESU's six-run rally with the big play, Joel Laslo's suicide squeeze bunt which scored two runs. Harmic hit a two-run homer for ESU in the seventh inning.

Freshman George LoPresto pitched in both games for the Warriors and got a loss in the first game and a win on the second.
