ESU-Franklin Pierce Baseball
FORT MYERS, Fla. - Tadgh LaBar and Anthony Piazza led the hitting attack and Gordy Kocher and Craig Whitten gained the pitching victories as East Stroudsburg University swept a baseball doubleheader over Franklin Pierce, 7-3 and 5-2, at Terry Park Monday.
The Warriors raised their record to 6-2 and will play Mount Vernon, Oh. in a 10 a.m. doubleheader today. Franklin Pierce is now 0-2.
LaBar hit two doubles and was 2-for-3 in the first game and had another double and went 2-for-4 in the second contest. Piazza was 2-for-4 in the first game and 3-for-4 with a double and a triple in the second.
Kocher, a freshman from Northampton, pitching a complete game in the opener, allowing five hits and no earned runs. He struck out seven batters, but walked eight.
The Warriors scored three runs in the third inning with Scott Roth driving in the first with a double and Matt Harmic the other two with a single to take a 4-0 lead. The Ravens rallied to close to 4-3, but ESU tallied two clinching runs in the fifth inning on Roth's single, Steve Harris' double and Roger Green's single. Roth went 3-for-4.
In the second game, Whitten pitched the first six innings and gave up only two runs for the victory. Jeff Wagner finished up and got a save.
A three-run rally in the first inning put the Warriors ahead for keeps. Labar doubled and Brett Reynolds singled and Roth knocked in a run with a sacrifice fly. Piazza then tripled over the centerfielder's head for another run and Joe Sobeski singled for the third run.
