ESU Baseball
FORT MYERS, Fla. – Scott Roth belted a two-run double as East Stroudsburg University scored three runs in the first inning and went on to defeat Davis and Elkins, 4-2, in the second of two baseball games at Taylor Park Sunday.
In the first contest, Missouri-St. Louis tallied two unearned runs in the seventh inning to upend ESU, 3-2.
The Warriors (4-2) started quickly against Davis and Elkins. Tadgh LaBar and Brett Reynolds both singled to open the game and Roth followed with his double to left-centerfield. Anthony Piazza then hit a single up the middle to knock in Roth for a quick 3-0 lead.
That was all the support starting pitcher Mike Pavolko needed. He went six innings and allowed five hits and one run while striking out three. He was helped by three ESU double plays. Mike Zimorowicz pitched the seventh inning and got a save.
Piazza and Ryan Conrad both went 2-for-3 for the Warriors. Billy Greenwell was 3-for-4 and drove in a run for Davis and Elkins (4-6).
Against Missouri-St. Louis, ESU scored a single run in the third inning on Reynolds’ single, a groundout and an error and another run in the fifth inning on Matt Harmic’s triple to rightfield and Piazza’s single.
Hurler Jason Tribbet nursed a 2-1 lead into the seventh when he walked Scott Luczak and a bad throw on Trent Wesley’s sacrifice bunt put runners on second and third base. Norman Mann hit a flyball to centerfield to bring home Luczak with the tying run and another bad throw on the relay let Wesley score the winning run.
Tribbet gave up only three hits and didn’t allow an earned run. Greg Bierling hurled the seventh inning and got the pitching win for the Rivermen (7-1).
The Warriors will play a doubleheader today at 10 a.m. against Franklin Pierce.
