FORT MYERS, Fla. – East Stroudsburg University’s baseball team opened its Florida trip sensationally Saturday by beating two nationally-ranked teams Slippery Rock, 7-1, and Missouri-St. Louis, 7-4, on the hitting of Brett Reynolds and the pitching of Mike Zimorowicz and Jason Ryan.
The Warriors raised their record to 4-2. Slippery Rock, ranked 15th in the NCAA Division II pre-season baseball poll, is now 8-4 while Missouri-St. Louis, 16th in the rankings, is now 6-6.
Reynolds went 6-for-7 in the twinbill and drove in four runs. After grounding out and reaching on a walk in his first two at-bats in the opener, he laced six straight hits, including a double, and was 4-for-4 in the second game.
Zimorowicz pitched a four-hitter against Slippery Rock, striking out nine batters. After allowing a first-inning run, he hurled shutout ball the rest of the way and didn’t give up a hit for the last 4 1/3 innings.
The Warriors scored all seven of their runs in the fifth inning. Singles by Anthony Piazza, Steve Harris and Tadgh LaBar loaded the bases and Reynolds delivered the first two runs with a double. LaBar then scored on Matt Harmic’s groundout and Bryan Yagel knocked in a run with a single. Ryan Hatfield’s triple produced two more runs and PJ Worsnick’s single plated the last run.
Harris and Reynolds were 2-for-3 while Yagel went 2-for-4. Mike Sikorski was 2-for-3 for the Rock.
Against Missouri-St. Louis, Ryan pitched six full innings and faced two batters in the seventh, giving up six hits and two earned runs while striking out six. Len Makarczyk got the last three outs without allowing a hit and was credited with a save.
The Warriors scored runs in the first four innings. Reynolds doubled and scored on Yagel’s single in the first inning and then drove in two runs with a single in the second inning.
Worsnick’s double and Piazza’s single produced a third-inning run and Ryan Hatfield and Worznick had run-producing singles and Yagel hit a sacrifice fly for three runs in the fourth.
In addition to Reynolds’ perfect game at the plate, Worsnick, Harris and Joe Sobeski were all 2 for 3 and Hatfield 2 for 4.
The Warriors will play another doubleheader today against Davis and Elkins at 10 a.m. and Ashland at 2 p.m.
