ESU-Kutztown Softball
KUTZTOWN – Freshman Tina Morak pitched a five-hit shutout and batted in the winning run as East Stroudsburg University blanked Kutztown, 2-0, in the opener of a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division softball doubleheader Monday.
The Golden Bears (16-10, 4-2 PSAC) came back to take the second game, 3-2, scoring all three runs, only one of them earned, in the second inning.
It was Morak’s first shutout of her college career and the first by an ESU pitcher since the last game of the 1998 season. The ESU righthander from Willow Grove struck out three batters, walked one and stranded seven Kutztown runners.
The Warriors (8-8, 3-3 PSAC) scored a run in the fifth inning as Nifer Shaw doubled, took third on Mary Beth Scotch’s single and rode home on Morak’s single. They added an insurance run in the sixth on Tara Greig’s single, Erika Lee’s single over the rightfielder’s head and an error.
In the second game, Morak allowed only three hits and retired the last 14 Kutztown batters in order. Two of the hits, however, combined with two ESU errors gave the Bears their three runs. Angie Nunan had an RBI single and Vanessa Strohl knocked in a run with a sacrifice fly.
The Warriors scored twice off winning pitcher Tara White in the sixth inning with Tara Buckley and Scotch getting the only hits. Buckley went 2 for 4.
