National Champions Cuvo, Way Gaita to be Inducted into East Stroudsburg Athletic Hall of Fame Saturday (Pictures below)
East Stroudsburg, Pa. - National championship wrestler Jack Cuvo '91 and track and field high jumper Karen Way Gaita '91 are two of the seven persons who will be inducted into the the East Stroudsburg University Athletic Hall of Fame Saturday (Nov. 10).
Also honored will be Dr. John McKeon, who guided the Warrior men's soccer teams for 16 years from 1966 to 1981.
Other inductees will be All-America diver Hank Spangler '70, time All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference football end Glenn Gottshalk '72, record-breaking field hockey scorer Karen Moliver '90, and All-Conference lacrosse and field hockey player Cindi Long '90.
Both Cuvo and Way Gaita were selected in their first year on the ballot. There is a ten-year waiting period between an athlete's graduation and his or her eligibility for the Athletic Hall of Fame.
Induction ceremonies will take place Saturday night at a banquet at the Best Western Pocono Inn in Stroudsburg. There also will be ceremonies at halftime of Saturday’s home football game against Edinboro.
Jack Cuvo
Cuvo is the school's only NCAA Division I champion. He won the 118-pound class at both the 1988 and 1989 NCAA Wrestling Championships. He also was fifth in the nationals as a sophomore.
He was undefeated his last two collegiate seasons with records of 45-0 as a senior and 43-0 as a junior. He had a career record of 164-7 and was unbeaten in dual matches at 73-0.
He won three PSAC and three Eastern Intercollegiate Athletic Associa-tion (EIWA) championships. He also earned All-America honors twice in cross country. He was chosen as the Senior Male Athlete of the Year in 1989.
Cuvo was a Pan American Games gold medalist and an alternate on the 1988 United States Olympic freestyle team. He was member of the 1986 USA World team.
He now owns and directs wrestling camps in his hometown of Easton and is the owner of two web sites, Cuvo’s Wrestling Warehouse and All-Sports Warehouse.
Karen Way Gaita
Gaita is the school's only NCAA women's champion. She captured the high jump title at the 1991 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Champion-ships.
She was second in the 1991 NCAA indoor and the 1990 NCAA outdoors meets. She was a three-time PSAC champion. She is the school record-holder in the event at 5-10. She was cho-sen as the Senior Female Athlete of the Year in 1991.
Gaita continued to compete in the high jump after graduation and made the 1996 United States Olympic trials. She also has competed in the USA indoor and outdoor nationals and has a career best performance of 6-1 3-4.
After coaching at the United States Military Academy, she returned to ESU as an assistant coach. She teaches Health and Physical Education in the Easton school district.
Glenn Gottshalk
Gottshalk was the Warriors' top football pass catcher with 39 receptions for 694 yards in 1970 and 39 catches for 425 yards in 1971.
He set a school record with four TD catches against both Bloomsburg and Kutztown in 1970. He made the All-PSAC twice and also was chosen on the All-East first team once.
Gottshalk has coached football for 28 years and is now an assistant coach at Hillborough, N.J. High School. He has taught Physical Education for the Branch-burg Township, N.J. school district for 29 years.
He also was an assistant coach at Immaculata, Somerville and Bridgewater-Raritan high schools and at FDU-Madison. He was a head coach for seven years at Manville High School and was named the Central Jersey Coach of the Year in 1987.
Cindi Long
Long is one of the only ESU athletes ever to earn All-Conference honors in two sports in the same school year. She made the All-PSAC first team in both field hockey and lacrosse in 1989-90.
She was a field hockey goalie and allowed only 20 goals in 19 games as a senior in 1989. She played various defensive positions in lacrosse.
She later was an assistant coach in both sports and also softball for the Warriors. She has worked as a PIAA field hockey umpire.
Long is a well-known local sports figure, having excelled in athletics at East Stroudsburg High School. She worked at Lim’s Quality Sports Shop, the Great Bear Golf and Country Club and at Reebok Sports Shop and is now assistant general manager for ARAMARK at Bushkill Falls.
Dr. John McKeon
McKeon led the Warriors to six PSAC men's soccer titles and to four NCAA tournament appearances.
His 1971 team played in the Division 1 tournament, losing in the first round. His 1972 and 1973 squads both reached the Division II tourney quarter-finals.
He also coached at the University of Bridgeport 12 years and Montclair State one year. His overall coaching record was 214-139-30 with nine NCAA tournament teams, including one second-place finish.
McKeon was the long-time executive director of the National Soccer Coaches’ Association. He was a member of the United Olympic Games Committee He also served as an officer for every major United States soccer organization. He is in the National Soccer Hall of Fame.
He was a 1948 graduate of Drake University where he ran on the track and field team.
Karen Moliver
Moliver set school field hockey record with 46 career goals from 1985-88. She led the Warriors to NCAA tournament berths with 18 goals as a junior and 13 as a senior. She was a three-time All-PSAC selection and made the All-America team twice.
She also was the first singles player for the tennis team and played softball one year. She was voted the Senior Female Athlete of the Year in 1989.
Moliver has taught at Perkiomen Valley High School for the last eight years and serves as department chair for Health and Physical Education. She also is a guidance counselor at the school.
She has coached the Perkiomen Valley softball team for seven years. She still participates in various athletic activ-ities and even ran in the 1995 Marine Corps Marathon.
Hank Spangler
Spangler was the Warriors' first All-America in swimming and diving. He placed second, the school's highest finish ever, in the one meter diving at the 1969 NCAA College Division Swimming and Diving meet.
He then earned All-America honors twice with an eighth in the one meter diving and 10th in the three meter diving in 1970.
He served as a diving coach at the United States Military Academy for 16 years and developed and trained NCAA national finalists. He was named the Metro-Atlantic Diving Coach of the Year for the 1987-88 season.
Spangler has worked in industry for the last 11 years for IBM, Minolta Business Systems, MDM Business Technologies and now for the last two years a digital sales executive for Canon Business Solutions.
