MAY 2008 VOL. XXVII NO. 8 In this Issue...
Dear APSCUF Members: Congratulations to election winners--and thanks to all who were willing to run for open positions. Special thanks to members of the APSCUF Executive Council and to our Delegates and Alternate Delegates who work hard at understanding both local and statewide issues. I am especially grateful to Mollie Whalen, Grievance Chair, and Joe Miele, Meet and Discuss Chair, for the hours and hours of work they do for faculty and coaches. And we all appreciate the good work of our Office Manager Toni Heller. Everyone will want to pay special attention to news from PASSHE and Human Resources about the Wellness Program, relevant to Article 21 of the CBA. Faculty and covered spouses/domestic partners who do not participate in the healthcare management program (wellness program) when available will have to pay higher contributions beginning January 1, 2009, and increasing again in July 2009 and July 2010, as outlined in Section 3h of Article 21. It is APSCUF’s understanding that the Wellness Program will be offered by Highmark, and that it will be phased in, with various phases involving wellness pledges, health risk assessments, physicals, lifestyle improvement programs, and/or on-line health education tools. Obviously, all faculty will want to review official detailed information very thoroughly. APSCUF Delegates have been asked to participate in a telephone delegate assembly in early May, because there may also be some major increases in costs related to faculty who participate in the Indemnity Program. Health care costs remain critical issues for all of us, and indeed, for all Americans. Watch for key information related to health plans and costs. Good luck with grading and best wishes for a nice summer. Sincerely, Nancy VanArsdale ESU-APSCUF OUTSTANDING SERVICE AWARD WINNER 2008 Congratulations Michelle Star, for her exemplary service over the years to ESU APSCUF. Professor Star has served as Legislative Chair, Delegate to Legislative Assembly, APSCUF Treasurer, and the Tenure Committee. Professor Star researched other teacher and university Solidarity Funds and organized ESU’s first APSCUF Solidarity Fund in 2003 and served as chair again in 2007. This fund had pledges of over $100,000.00 with several faculty members pledging as much as $15,000.00 in 2007. Congratulations to Professor Star. We appreciate her efforts on behalf of ESU APSCUF. In an attempt to involve more members in Lobby Day activities APSCUF Legislative committee decided that instead of a Spring Lobby Day in Harrisburg, we would do “virtual” lobbying to legislators through electronic mailings, telephone calls, and in-person meetings. APSCUF Legislative committee hopes individuals will feel compelled to contact their local legislators about some of the following legislation that is of particular importance to APSCUF. Marriage Amendment: Senate Bill 1250, P.N. 1776
(Brubaker) SERS/TIAA Pension Credit Transfer FACE Legislation: House Bill 871 (Hughes) Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) Legislation State Appropriations CONTACT INFORMATION FOR LOCAL LEGISLATORS
