Freshman Criteria

Incoming First Year Students

1. Applicants must provide official college transcripts
2. A minimum cumulative high school GPA of 3.00 and above.

3. Three units of laboratory science selected among biology, chemistry, and physics. The three units may include a second year of an earlier course, for example AP biology.

4. Four units of college preparatory mathematics including Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, and a math class for which algebra II is a prerequisite such as trigonometry or pre-calculus.

Freshmen nursing majors will be advised by the Nursing Department Faculty and will registered for the following courses:

Fall

• BIO 116/117 Anatomy and Physiology for the Health Professions with lab- 4 credits
• MATH 110 General Statistics- 3 credits
• PSY 100 General Psychology - 3 credits
• FYE 100 University Studies - 3 credits
• ENG 103 English Composition - 3 credits
• Total Credits = 16

Spring

• BIO 118/119 Anatomy and Physiology for the Health Professions II with lab - 4 credits
• HLT/EXSC 105 Health and Wellness - 3 credits
• CMST 111 Introduction to Communication - 3 credits
• SOC 102 Introduction to Cultural Diversity - 3 credits
• General Education Elective - 3 credits
• Total Credits = 16

Upon completion of the course work noted above, students with a grade of “C” or better in each course and a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or above will progress in the nursing program to their sophomore year.

Transfer Admission Criteria for Internal Students

Current ESU students (internal) seeking admission as a Nursing major will submit a letter addressed to the Admission, Progression and Graduation Committee indicating their interest in the Nursing program for the next fall semester, two letters of recommendation from professors at the college level who can speak of your academic performance in their class, and all college transcripts are to be submitted directly to the Nursing Department by May 1^st. The Nursing Department is located in DeNike Center for Human Services room 202.

Current ESU students interested in being admitted into the Nursing major in the fall of their sophomore year, must have at least 30 college credits, an overall college GPA of 3.0 or better, and the following specific college courses completed with a grade of “C” or better by the end of their spring semester:

• Anatomy and Physiology I & II with related labs
• English Composition
• General Statistics
• Introduction to Psychology
• Introduction to Cultural Diversity
• Speech Communication

Applicants are considered for fall admission only into the Nursing major, and preference is given to applications who submit all required materials by May 1^st. Admission is highly competitive and seat availability is limited. Selection process will be academic performance driven.

Transferred Students: External and Post Baccalaureate

External applicants are only considered for fall admission into the Nursing program starting in the sophomore level of the curriculum and preference is given to applications who submit all required materials by May 1^st . Admission is highly competitive and seat availability is limited. Selection process with be academic performance driven.

Students interested in transferring directly into the Nursing program in the fall of their sophomore year, must have at least 30 college credits, present an overall college GPA of 3.0 or better, and the specific college courses completed with a grade of “C” or better.

Applicants must also provide official college transcripts, two letters of recommendation from professors whom the student had in class at the college level, and a letter of intent indicating why the student wants to pursue the nursing profession.
