Exercise Science is an exciting field in which there continue to be many challenging and unanswered questions. The Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) Accredited Exercise Science curriculum is designed to effectively prepare graduates to become Applied Exercise Scientists with the ability to obtain professional certifications.
Students accepted to the 3 - Year Accelerated Track will be given the unique opportunity to complete their undergraduate degree in 3 calendar years. Potential benefits of our accelerated program include:
- Early entry into the workforce or graduate/professional school
- Completion of undergraduate and master’s degree in 4 years if attending one of ESU’s graduate programs in exercise science
- Reduced reliance on student loans
- Additional academic and social experiences with other accelerated students and faculty
- Reserved campus housing with other accelerated students in a Living and Learning Community (see below)

- SAT > 1050
- Math SAT > 550
Students in the 3-Year Accelerated Track are encouraged to participate in monthly events organized by the Exercise Science faculty. The table below lists the events for the upcoming academic year.

Exercise Science 3-Year Accelerated Living-Learning Community
What is a Living-Learning Community (LLC)?
Generally, a Living-Learning Community is an intentionally designed residential community comprised of students who share academic, social, and/or cultural interests. The Exercise Science 3-Year Accelerated LLC consists of only Exercise Science majors.
What are the Goals of the LLC?
The LLC is administered by the Department of Exercise Science and is designed to foster the success of students enrolled in the 3-Year Accelerated Program by providing academic support, opportunities for social engagement, development of leadership skills, opportunities to develop both peer and professional networks, and by facilitating student engagement with the department, college, and university.
How are these goals accomplished?
These goals are accomplished through student participation in group activities and programs that involve interaction with faculty, participation in service-learning projects, field trips and social events. The LLC provides support to its participants on many levels. All students participating in the LLC live together on the same floor in Hawthorne Suites, meaning that the living environment provides an immediate peer-support environment. The LLC offers participants the opportunity to remain in the LLC throughout the course of their undergraduate experience, which provides for a mentoring environment, as our upperclassmen live on the same floor as our younger students. This peer-support environment is further enhanced by the presence of a Resident Advisor (RA), also living on the floor, which is an upperclassman or graduate student majoring in Exercise Science. The director of the 3-Year Accelerated Program works directly with Residence Life to hire the most suitable RA possible. A Graduate Assistant (GA) whom is a graduate student in Exercise Science, has an office in the LLC, and assists with monthly programming and tutoring, both of which are explained below.
What types of programming are offered to LLC participants?
GA Office Hours – LLC participants are provided with an opportunity to receive tutoring from our in-house GA. The GA completed his/her undergraduate degree in Exercise Science at ESU and is therefore, very familiar with the undergraduate courses. The GA hold a minimum of 5 office hours each week in the LLC where students can drop in with questions about lecture material, exams, laboratory assignments, etc. Depending on the participants’ schedules, the GA may also organize study sessions for groups of students enrolled in the same course.
Department Programs – Each month the Department of Exercise Science organizes and administers one program for our LLC students. These programs are designed to provide two or more of the following: professional development, networking opportunities, social engagement, and service learning. Importantly, department faculty participate in these programs, which provides an important avenue for students to develop rapport with Exercise Science faculty outside of the classroom. Examples include a trip to the regional meeting of the Mid-Atlantic American College of Sports Medicine in Harrisburg, a healthy eating cooking demonstration, snow tubing at Shawnee Mountain, and hiking at Bushkill falls.
Participation in LLC – Offers of membership within the LLC are made exclusively to students enrolled in the 3-year Accelerated Program in Exercise Science. Students who are live in the LLC are given the first opportunity to remain in the LLC with their chosen roommate. In the event that the LLC is not filled, only Exercise Science majors are allowed to fill empty rooms.
Exercise science faculty members hold doctoral degrees in exercise-related fields of study and hold advanced certifications from the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) and/or the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM).
Each year, all faculty attend both regional and national conferences to present research, network and collaborate with colleagues from other institutions, and attend meetings discussing current findings and recommendations in the field of exercise science.
Our faculty also publish original research in peer-reviewed journals, chair university wide committees, and are active leaders in the community.
