Message to Parents
September 12, 2016
Some parents have expressed concern about the potential strike action by APSCUF, the faculty union that represents East Stroudsburg University and the other 13 institutions within the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (the “State System”).
Last week the faculty union took a strike authorization vote of its membership and announced today that APSCUF faculty members have decided they would authorize union leadership to call for a strike at some time in the future. Today’s announcement does not mean a strike is imminent.
Please know that in the history of the State System, although strike votes have become the norm for the faculty union, a strike has never occurred. As a matter of fact, the State System has a number of additional bargaining sessions scheduled with APSCUF faculty leadership and will continue to work toward a contract agreement.
However, leadership at ESU and at the State System Office in Harrisburg are also continuing to work hard every day on potential contingency plans should a strike occur. If a strike is to occur, students should plan to attend classes. The administration and many faculty and staff are committed to ensuring that the education of our students continues. ESU also fully expects to provide housing, meals, and 24-hour security for ESU students.
We have sent several messages to our students, updating them on the faculty negotiations to date and intend to keep them updated as developments occur. I invite you to visit the following State System website for updates and responses to frequently asked questions. Please visit:
We continue to monitor the situation closely and will update students and families as necessary. I would like to thank you in advance for your trust and confidence in ESU and the State System.
