Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC)

Federal animal welfare regulations require that an Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) review and approve all activities involving the use of vertebrate animals prior to the initiation of these activities.

Compliance with animal welfare regulations is mandatory and is the responsibility of all individuals who choose to work with live vertebrate animals.

This mandate includes animals used for instructional purposes as well as for individual and collaborative research.

Forms

Members of the East Stroudsburg University community who wish to work with vertebrate animals must have an approved IACUC protocol prior to commencing animal use.

Applicants are expected to be familiar with the requirements of the Animal Welfare Act and to comply with any applicable regulations (e.g. obtain any necessary permits from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Pennsylvania Game Commission, Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission, or other state and federal agencies).

Training

In accordance with current professional guidelines established in the National Research Council’s Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, ESU's Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) requires that all faculty, staff, and students who work with live vertebrate animals attend training in the proper care and use of animals.

This training is free and is provided as a series of web-based modules with sample questions and final exams.

All personnel working with animals at ESU are required to take an introductory module on working with the IACUC.

Depending upon the nature of the animal use, personnel may also be asked to complete additional specialized modules.

The Principal Investigator is responsible for ensuring that all personnel working with animals complete the necessary IACUC training.
